Where we began

Matalan was built on a simple but pioneering concept. By staying out of town, we can keep our overheads low and pass the savings onto the customer.
In the early 1980s our founder John Hargreaves discovered the US concept of the out-of-town retail outlet. Despite their large size, these outlets were able to offer low prices because they were situated outside expensive areas. They also negotiated directly with their suppliers. Inspired, Hargreaves brought the concept over to the UK in 1985 - opening the first Matalan store in Preston.
The idea took off immediately. Within ten years, there were 50 Matalan stores across the UK. In 1997, the firm moved its head office from Preston to Skelmersdale and created a new distribution centre. From that point on, there was no looking back. Today, Matalan has over 200 stores in the UK and trades from over 5 million square feet. Such is the success of the brand, we've even started opening stores in town centres and overseas.

We've always been proud of our wide selection of quality fashion and homeware. But recently, we've added a whole range of exciting brands to the mix. Customers can now buy top brands such as Be Beau, Papaya, Et Vous and Jeff Banks 24:7 - while our Influence range offers stylish homeware accessories from names like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Gino D'Acampo and Colin & Justin.
Times may be tough, but Matalan's emphasis on affordability has meant that its sales have stayed strong. So much so, we're continuing to expand. Last year saw us open three new stores here in the UK. We also broke new ground by unveiling our first ever international outlet in Oman, Jordan. And if that wasn't enough, we've got more store openings in the pipeline.
While other retailers have slashed their costs, we've increased our investment in the business. For example, last year we spent £16 million on totally refurbishing our stores. The results are there for all to see. For our customers, Matalan is now a truly engaging place to shop. For our staff, it's also an attractive place to work.
Matalan is famed for being the out-of-town retailer. But lately, we've started to challenge this received wisdom. For instance, we now have stores on the high streets of Derry and Glasgow.

Our prices are lower. Our stores are bigger. We trade in much higher volumes than anyone else. All these things have been said about Matalan. And they're all partly true. But none of them gets to the heart of what makes us different.

Low prices don't mean compromising on quality. Far from it. Many of our clothes are made in the same factories as top-end designers.
